Standard Chartered Bangladesh, in collaboration with Sustainable Agriculture Foundation Bangladesh (SAF Bangladesh), has successfully developed two farming smart model villages in Rangpur District. This transformative initiative aims to uplift underprivileged rural communities by fostering sustainable agriculture and creating opportunities for growth. Through this program, over 3,500 villagers have gained support, while young entrepreneurs have been empowered to drive agriculture-based employment.
Key interventions included the establishment of two Centres of Excellence (CoEs), which serve as hubs for agricultural training, innovation, and community services. Farmers’ Hubs were also developed to improve access to markets, modern technologies, and advisory services. The initiative deployed cutting-edge agricultural tools and techniques such as hybrid solar irrigation systems, combine harvesters, tractors, natural storage facilities, soilless seedlings, vermicomposting, and safe food production methods. These efforts have generated 62 new employment opportunities and supported the development of 37 rural entrepreneurs.
The program also prioritized capacity building through training programs and community sensitization initiatives, which led to the early adoption of agricultural insurance by 300 farmers. These interventions have strengthened community collaboration, improved financial resilience, and enhanced stakeholder linkages, setting a model for sustainable rural development.
Bitopi Das Chowdhury, Head of Corporate Affairs, Brand & Marketing, Standard Chartered Bangladesh, said, "Having implemented 18 impactful agricultural projects covering more than 57,000 beneficiaries across the country , this unique initiative marks a new milestone – transforming entire communities within these model villages. By addressing almost every farming aspect of rural Bangladesh, we are setting a precedent for the holistic agricultural development and sustainable growth, inspiring changes at the grassroots level. The best outcome of this initiative is - once initiated - it can be replicated and continued by the villagers eternally. It is a great experience to collaborate with SAF Bangladesh in transforming these villages into models of innovation and opportunity.”
Md. Farhad Zamil, Executive Director of SAF Bangladesh, said, “Our partnership with Standard Chartered underscores the power of collective action in driving rural transformation. Together, we are creating pathways for sustainable growth and resilience for farmers and their families.”
