5 of a family burnt in fire from ‘gas line leak’ in N’ganj

Five members of a family sustained burn injuries as a fire broke out apparently from gas line leak at Aukoba Bazar in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj on Friday (3 November) night.

The injured- Hasun Banu, 55, her husband Oli Ahmed, 65, son Omar Faruk, 18, daughter Sahara Begum, 24, and brother Sonauddin, 45, are now undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka. 

Hasun is a housewife while her husband and brother run a dry fish shop in Gausia market. Their daughter is physically challenged and son is a garment worker.

Nure Alam, nephew of Hasun, said his aunt set up a device to increase flow of gas at the house around two weeks back due to low pressure of gas. The fire broke out after a blast when they were asleep in the house around 11 pm, he said.

Hearing this, neighbours rushed to the spot and took the injured to US-Bangla Hospital in Rupganj and later shifted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

Hasun suffered 46 percent burn, Oli 58 percent, Sahara 30 percent, Omar 15 percent and Sonauddin 90 percent and their condition were stated to be critical, said Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost's in-charge Md Bacchu Miah quoting physicians.

Officer-in-charge of Rupganj police station ASM Sayed said that members of Fire Service and Civil Defence inspected the spot.
