The Ghaghat Lake, formerly an abandoned stretch of the Ghaghat River located in Gaibandha town, has undergone a remarkable transformation from a dumping ground into a thriving amusement park.

A magnificent bridge now graces the lake, elevating its charm, and a series of paved steps, walkways, and comfortable benches have been thoughtfully installed on both of its shores.

According to local accounts, the Ghaghat River once meandered through the heart of Gaibandha city. However, approximately 33 years ago, in 1990, the river underwent a significant redirection, altering its course about one kilometer northward. Consequently, the original 6-kilometer segment of the main Ghaghat River was abandoned, giving rise to what is now known as Ghaghat Lake. Over the years, the lack of maintenance allowed garbage to accumulate, turning the lake into a breeding ground for insects.

In response to the community's demands, the Local Government Engineering Directorate (LGED) initiated the 'Ghaghat Lake Development Project,' with the dedicated efforts of Mahabub Ara Begum, Member of Parliament for Gaibandha-2 (Sadar) Constituency.

As per Gaibandha LGED sources, the Ghaghat Lake development project commenced in the fiscal year 2017-18, with an estimated cost of around Tk 28 crore. During the same period, construction of a six-kilometer lake park commenced, with a minor setback in progress due to encroachments and eviction issues, rendering about two kilometers inaccessible.

Today, the shores of Ghaghat Lake teem with visitors. People gather on the picturesque bridge, some indulging in jhalmuri snacks, while others take leisurely strolls. The joyful laughter of children echoes in the air, intermingling with the chatter of the crowd. Many individuals opt for a tranquil seat on the lakeside benches, engaging in conversations and savoring the serene ambiance.

Sakhawat Hossain, a college teacher from the Sukhnagar area, who sought a respite from the chaos and pollution of daily life, remarked, "As soon as you step out of your home, you encounter traffic jams, dust, sand, and vehicle emissions. I came here to breathe in the fresh air. The beautiful bridge, well-crafted stairs, and comfortable seating are a delightful sight."

Umm Habiba, a college student, shared her perspective, stating that the city's surroundings, characterized by aged structures, offer limited opportunities for fresh air. Therefore, she frequently visits the lake, where she has met numerous individuals and found the experience highly enjoyable.

Khademul Islam, residing in the Bridge Road area of the city, voiced his hope that with proper cleaning and the introduction of boats, floating food establishments, and appropriate lighting on both sides of the lake, Ghaghat Lake could evolve into a prominent entertainment hub. He emphasized the need for proactive involvement from municipal authorities.

Matlubar Rahman, the Mayor of Gaibandha Municipality, assured that the lake would be cleansed, and arrangements for boats and lighting were in progress. Funds had been allocated to carry out these enhancements, ultimately transforming Ghaghat Lake into a full-fledged recreational center.

Previously devoid of recreational spots, Gaibandha town now enjoys an atmosphere of leisure. Ziaul Haque, the Convener of Gaibandha Youth Citizens Committee, expressed his belief that the Ghaghat Lake project's implementation has fostered an environment of entertainment. He remarked, "People come here to relax and spend their time. This will help reduce youth-related crimes. They are now taking selfies on the bridge and relishing the open-air ambiance, attracting individuals of all ages to congregate here."
