As the monsoon bids farewell, farmers in the Nandigram upazila have embarked on early tomato cultivation, navigating numerous challenges with hopes of reaping higher prices in the winter market.

Despite the inherent risks, these resilient farmers are embracing the potential for substantial profits.

Early tomatoes from Nandigram are gaining nationwide acclaim, adding to the anticipation surrounding this agricultural endeavor. However, the specter of natural calamities looms large, threatening significant losses and the depletion of hard-earned capital. Undeterred, the farmers of Nandigram upazila remain undaunted, venturing into early tomato cultivation with optimism and determination.

In villages such as Bhatgram, Chakalma, and Badlashan, black plastic-wrapped tomatoes have made their way into fields, methodically arranged with precision. The meticulous mulching method has resulted in rows of tomato-laden trees, spaced two feet apart, creating a uniform landscape. Each tree stands four to five feet tall, a testament to the farmers' dedicated efforts.

Abdul Ghafoor of Bhatgram shared his experience, stating, "I've cultivated early tomatoes on a 20th decimal land and will be harvesting in the coming days. I am hopeful of turning a profit by selling these early varieties."

Rezaul, a farmer from Badlashan village, revealed, "I planted 1000 seedlings of successful varieties two months ago on a 25th-century land. With an investment of Tk 30 thousand, I've already witnessed impressive yields, with 140-150 tomatoes per plant. The current market rate is Tk 150 per kg, and in a week, I'll begin harvesting. If all goes well, I expect to earn around Tk 3 lakh from the 25 decimal land."

Acknowledging the farmers' dedication, Nandigram Upazila Agriculture Officer Gaziul Haque commented, "Farmers in the upazila are actively engaged in tomato cultivation, particularly excelling in vegetable cultivation. The agriculture office provides farmers with essential inputs like seeds and fertilizers free of cost, accompanied by comprehensive advice and support for tomato cultivation."

As Nandigram's farmers persevere in the face of challenges, early tomato cultivation emerges as a promising venture, signaling a potential boon for the local agricultural community.
