Habiganj witnessed more than 50 cocktail explosions in different places of the town on Saturday night ahead of the 12th parliamentary election scheduled to be held on Sunday (7 January). The cocktails exploded in various places including the district election office, said Ajay Chandra Dev, officer-in-charge (OC) of Habiganj police station.
Besides, a clash between police and supporters of a 48-hr blockade enforced by BNP and other like-minded political parties, took place at Poil Road in Shayestanagar area of Habiganj district around 8 pm.
At that time, two motorcycles and a temporary office of an Awami League candidate were burnt. The supporters of BNP and other like-minded political parties also vandalized a workshop during the clash.
Three cocktails were exploded in the district election office but no one was injured, locals said.
Police fired 50 rounds of tear gas cells and rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.
The situation is now normal, added the OC.
