Five primary schools have been declared closed amid the rising tension due to ongoing fighting in Myanmar along the Ghumdum-Tumbru border of Naikkhangchhari upazila in Bandarban district.

The closure information has been made in a circular signed by the Deputy Secretary Aktarrunahar of the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education.

The five schools are Baishpari Government Primary School, Bhajabnia Government Primary School, Tumbru Government Primary School, Poshchimkul Tumbru Government Primary School, and Dakhshin Ghumdum Government Primary School.

The mentioned five government primary schools along the border will remain closed until further orders.

If the local situation improves, the District Primary Education Officer, Bandarban Hill District will take necessary measures to open the schools including resumption of academic activities in the mentioned schools in consultation with the higher authorities.

At least two people were killed and a child was injured after a mortar shell, reportedly fired by Myanmar, fell on the Ghumdum border in Bandarban on Monday.

The incident took place at around 2:30pm when the shell hit an under-construction house in the Naikhongchhari upazila.

This ongoing conflict has caused widespread panic among the locals.

Besides, a total of 95 members of Myanmar BGP on Sunday took shelter in Bangladesh amid a conflict between the Myanmar military and the armed rebel group, the Arakan Army, in Myanmar's Rakhine state.

Locals in the affected areas reported extensive gunfire, mortar shells, and explosive rocket launcher fire between Myanmar’s security forces and the Arakan Army (AA) and Rohingya Solidarity Organization (RSO) along the border near the Naf River.

In response to the escalating violence, authorities have taken precautionary measures.

The sound of mortar shells and gunfire continues along the outskirts of Myanmar near the Ghumdum border area of Naikhongchhari upazila in Bandarban.
