A union parishad (UP) member has been suspended for marrying an underage girl in Ranisankail upazila of Thakurgaon. The Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Ministry issued a notice in this regard signed by its Senior Assistant Secretary Purobi Goldar on February 1.
Accused Tularam Roy was the member of the ward no. 1 under Bachor union of the upazila.
According to the notice, the UP member got married to a 14-year-old of Udisha village, despite having a wife and two children.
The upazila administration formed a committee to investigate the incident after the allegation surfaced last year.
As the allegations were found to be true, the committee sent a report to the ministry with recommendation from the district’s deputy commissioner.
Ranisankail Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rakibul Hasan confirmed the matter, saying that they received a letter sent from the ministry suspending the UP member yesterday.
