A complaint has been lodged with a Chattogram court on Tuesday (20 February), accusing 16 individuals, including the Senior Jail Superintendent of Chattogram Central Jail, over torturing an inmate to death.
Purobi Palit, the wife of the deceased, filed the complaint with the Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court, according to the family’s lawyer, Ajoy Dhar.
The court has taken the allegations into consideration and scheduled the next hearing, Dhar mentioned.
The accused include Chattogram Central Jail’s Senior Superintendent Muhammad Manjur Hossain; Jailer Mohammad Emran Hossain Miah; Deputy Jailers Nowshad Miah, Akherul Islam, Sumaiya Khatun, Ibrahim; the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Boalkhali Police Station Md. Ashab Uddin; Inspector (Investigation) Md. Saiful Islam; Sub-Inspectors Abu Musa, Md Saiful Islam, Rizaul Jabbar; duty officer, constables Kamal, Asadullah, and two ward masters of the jail.
The complaint detailed that on January 27, a Boalkhali police station team, led by SI Musa, arrested 38-year-old Rubel Dey from his home in Dakshin Joustpura village without a warrant.
Following the arrest, the police allegedly demanded Tk 2 lakh from Dey’s family for his release, which the family refused.
Subsequently, the police accused him of possessing 200 liters of liquor and filed a case against him that same night.
The following morning, SI Rizaul Jabbar presented Dey before a court, displaying visible injury marks. The court then ordered his transfer to Chattogram Central Jail.
On visiting the jail on February 2, Dey’s family reported finding him in a grave condition, although he was in good health at the time of his arrest.
Rubel Dey died in the jail on the night of February 4, with his family alleging that he was tortured to death.
