Duck farming has emerged as a lucrative venture, transforming the fortunes of individuals across both rural and urban landscapes. This burgeoning trend, heralded as a pathway to economic liberation, is witnessing a surge in popularity, particularly among the youth in Sarsha upazila of Jashore.
Shariful, a young entrepreneur, shared his success story, emphasizing the profitability of duck farming. With each egg fetching wholesale prices of 15 taka, Shariful's farm amassed a staggering profit of 1 lakh 80 thousand taka within three months. His farm exclusively raises 'Campbell' ducks, known for their prolific egg-laying abilities, ensuring a steady revenue stream. Despite facing challenges in expanding his farm due to financial constraints, Shariful remains optimistic, highlighting the potential for growth with government support.
Shariful's exemplary journey from financial hardship to prosperity serves as an inspiration to many. Visitors flock to his farm daily, seeking guidance and motivation, while numerous young entrepreneurs in the vicinity have ventured into duck farming, following in his footsteps. Currently, Shariful manages a flock of 250 ducks, each acquired at a rate of Tk 450 from Barisal last October.
Reflecting on his transformative journey, Shariful reminisced about his humble beginnings and the relentless perseverance that propelled him forward. With unwavering dedication and familial support, he turned adversity into opportunity, transcending the confines of poverty.
Abdul Khalek, chairman of Baganchra Union Parishad in Sharsha, lauds Shariful's farm as an exemplary model, highlighting how it has alleviated poverty and spurred others to follow suit, thereby combating unemployment in the region.
Dr. Vinoy Krishna Mandal, the Livestock Officer of Sharsha Upazila, underscores the area's potential for duck breeding, given its abundant canals and rivers. The Livestock Department provides guidance and support to poultry farmers, capitalizing on the high demand for duck and eggs and an effective marketing system.
As duck farming continues to thrive, empowered by government assistance and community enthusiasm, it promises not only economic prosperity but also a sustainable solution to livelihood challenges, reshaping the socio-economic landscape of rural and urban communities alike.
