This year, around 10,000 hectares of land in Bhola district were dedicated to potato cultivation, bringing joy to farmers with selling prices ranging from Tk 20 to Tk 25 per kg.
The potato production area in Bhola district reduced by 1000 acres this year due to previous losses suffered by farmers who did not receive fair prices. Visiting potato-producing regions like Rajapur and Pub Char Ilisha in Bhola Sadar Upazila revealed farmers actively harvesting their crops.
A recent visit to the potato-producing regions of Rajapur and Pub Char Ilisha in Bhola Sadar Upazila revealed farmers engrossed in the bustling activity of harvesting their crops. Bashir Ahmed, a local potato producer, lamented the significant loss incurred this year. Despite commencing planting activities with zeal akin to previous years, adverse weather conditions led to substantial potato loss, primarily due to untimely rains causing seed rot in many cultivated fields.
Hasan Warishul Kabir, Deputy Director of Bhola District Agriculture Extension Department, emphasized the district's agricultural versatility. With most lands supporting triple cropping, farmers sustain engagement in year-round crop production. This diversified approach not only ensures continuous crop cycles but also yields appreciable economic returns.
Potato harvesting in the district nears completion, with a notable advantage for local farmers being the presence of cold storage facilities. Financially stable farmers can leverage these facilities to preserve their produce, enabling strategic selling during favorable market conditions.
Despite challenges posed by unpredictable weather patterns, Bhola district's potato farmers exhibit resilience and adaptability, capitalizing on available resources and infrastructural support to navigate through agricultural uncertainties and optimize returns on their produce.
Overall, Bhola district's potato farming community exemplifies perseverance and resourcefulness in the face of agricultural uncertainties, contributing significantly to the region's economic resilience and food security.
