A Joypurhat court on Monday (29 April) convicted 19 people and sentenced them to life imprisonment for killing a man over previous enmity in 2002.
Judge of the Joypurhat Additional District and Session Judge-2, Nurul Islam handed down the punishment.
The convicts are Alam, Dola, Osman, Korban, Azadul, Labu, Babu, Aminur, Faraz Mandal, Shuktu, Dulal, Aleem, Nazrul, Saidul, Sanwar, Saiful, Kalam, Ukil and Zaharul of Harenda village in Panchbibi upazila. Of them, Ukil and Zaharul tried in absentia.
The court also fined Tk 50,000, in default, to suffer two years more in rigorous imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, Abdur Rahman, son of Shamsuddin of Harenda village in Panchbibi upazila was picked up to the house of one convict Alam, from his paddy land on November 22, 2002, over previous enmity.
Later, they beat him up mercilessly, leaving him dead.
Abdul Barik, brother of Abdur Rahman filed a case with Panchbibi Police Station.
