A Joypurhat court on Tuesday (7 May) sentenced three people to death over killing a van driver in 2005.
Judge Md. Nurul Islam of Joypurhat Additional Sessions Judge's Court-1 handed down the verdict on Tuesday, said Public Prosecutor of Joypurhat Judge Court Advocate Nripendranath Mondal.
The convicts are Harunur Rashid, son of Jahangir, Moshtaq, son of Moslem and Hafizar, son of Jashim of Aora village in Kalai upazila of the district. Among them, Harunur Rashid is absconding. The were fined Tk 50,000 each.
After hearing the verdict, one of the accused fell sick at the courtroom and was immediately admitted to Joypurhat General Hospital.
According to a case statement, van driver Abu Salam was strangled to death in Durgadaha area of Sadar upazila in Joypurhat in 2005.
Later, the accused dumped the body in an old grave in Aora area of Kalai and snatched his van.
On January 13, 2005, locals found Abu Salam’s body and informed police.
Kalai Police Station Inspector Mirza Md Shahjahan Ali filed a murder case with Kalai Police Station in this connection.
