A man with mental disability allegedly hacked to death his wife, mother of three children, in Sadar upazila of Meherpur early Friday (10 May), said police.
The deceased was identified as Saleha Khatun, wife of Elahi Box of Gobhipur village under the upazila.
Locals said the husband suddenly started hacking his wife with locally–made sharp weapons when she came out of the house in the early morning, leaving her critically injured.
Hearing screams, neighbours rushed to the spot and took her to Meherpur General Hospital where physicians declared her dead upon arrival, they said.
Sadar police station’s Officer-in-Charge Sheikh Kony Mia confirmed the matter saying that the accused is mentally-challenged as per the words of the locals.
No one could share the reason behind the murder, he said, adding that the locals handed over Elahi Box to police upon detention.
A process was underway to take legal action in this regard, added the police officer.
