A Chattogram court on Sunday (26 May) ordered the arrest of Jashim Uddin, a chairman candidate of Chandanaish upazila polls, for defaulting on bank loans of Tk 118 crore by May 30.
Judge Mujahidur Rahman of the Chattogram Money Loan Court issued the order this afternoon.
The court also asked for an explanation of how Jasim Uddin is participating in the election campaign despite a warrant being issued against him.
Due to his participation in the election campaign, the court ordered the Officer-in-Charge of Chandanaish Police Station to arrest him immediately.
Confirming the matter, the court's bench assistant Rezaul Karim said that the candidate owes approximately Tk 118 crore to different banks.
Of them, he owes Tk 60 crore to Padma Bank and Tk 11 crore to Sonali Bank.
On March 30, Jasim Uddin and his wife Tanzina Sultana Juhi were sentenced to five months’ imprisonment.
Jasim Uddin is electioneering with the motorcycle symbol for the upcoming phase of upazila election.
