Two prime accused arrested over gang-rape in Kurigram

Police have arrested two prime accused in a case filed over the gang-rape of a woman in Kurigram's Char Rajibpur upazila. The arrestees are butchers Zainal Mia, son of Abu Samar of Halpara village of Sadar Union of Upazila, and Alam, son of Md Shahid Ali of Tangalia Para area.

Police conducted raids on Friday late night and arrested them from Dewanganj area of Jamalpur, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rajibpur Thana Police Ashikur Rahman said on Saturday (1 June) afternoon.

According to the locals, an organized group has gang-raped a housewife in Sadar Union of Rajibpur Upazila for a long time taking advantage of her financial helplessness.

When it came to light, the victim and her husband tried to commit suicide by taking poison on May 24.

They were taken to Rajibpur Upazila Health Complex and the victim's husband Jahangir recovered. When victim Asha Khatun's physical condition deteriorated, she was referred to Jamalpur Sadar Hospital.

After receiving treatment there for three days, when Asha Khatun's physical condition further deteriorated, she was referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. But family members brought her home on Monday (May 28) night. The next day at around 2 pm, Asha Khatun died there.

On information, police recovered the body and sent it for the post-mortem.

Later, an unnatural death (UD) case was filed at the police station on the same day.

On Friday (May 31) night, on the request of the police, victim’s maternal uncle filed a rape case at the Rajibpur police station.

Al Asad Md Mahfuzul Islam, superintendent of Kurigram Police (SP), said they have arrested the two main accused within 12 hours of the rape case at Rajibpur police station.

“Whoever is involved in this incident, we will bring them to justice,” he added.
