Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh on Wednesday (12 June) said they have undertaken a massive programme to dispose wastes of sacrificial animals within 24 hours during the Eid-ul-Azha.

“The DSCC has taken steps to dispose wastes of sacrificial animals within 24 hours during the Eid-ul-Azha. We will start disposing wastes of cattle markets from the midnight of day before Eid,” he told reporters after witnessing the preparations at the Jatiya Eidgah Maidan where the main Eid jamaat will be held on Monday.

Taposh said the main Eid congregation marking the holy Eid-ul Azha will be held at the Jatiya Eidgah maidan at 7am. Around 35 thousand devotees will be able to offer prayers inside the pandal at the National Eidgah Maidan, he added.

Calling upon the people of Dhaka to complete the Qurbani related activities within the first two days of the three-day festival, Taposh said: "It will be my humble request . . . Many people sacrifice animals on the third day of Eid. All the workers involved in our Qurbani related activities need rest as they will be working continuously for 72 hours."

He said DSCC has made extensive preparations for the removal of sacrificial animal wastes.

"We will monitor the waste removal operations through the central control room on the day of Eid," he added.

Noting that DSCC removed the animal-waste within 24 hours last year, he said: "We have such preparations this time as well. We have already added 25 drump trucks with the ability of carrying 10 tons each, and 10 pay-loaders more with other vehicles and equipment.”

The mayor said Eid holidays for employees of waste management department of the city corporation have been asked to dispose sacrificial animal wastes within the quickest possible time.

He extended Eid greetings to the people of Dhaka in advance.

DSCC chief executive officer Md Mizanur Rahman, secretary Akramuzzaman, acting chief engineer Ashiqur Rahman, chief waste management officer Mohammad Nasim Ahmed, regional executive officer of region-1 Md Shafiqul Islam and chief health officer Dr Fazle Shamsul Kabir, among others, were present.
