Flash flood threat looms as rainfall continues in Sylhet

Water levels of all major rivers in Sylhet keep rising for the last few days due to continuous heavy rain, triggering apprehensions of flash flood. Sylhet Deputy Magistrate Sheikh Russel Hasan came up on Thursday ordered all government officials of all upazilas and district administrations to remain prepared to tackle the possible flood.

Sylhet Weather Observatory Centre recorded 105 mm of rainfall from 6 am to 9 am on Thursday while 349 mm rainfall was recorded in India’s Cherrapunji in the past 24 hours.

In an SMS, the DC said a 535mm rainfall was recorded in Sylhet and Cherrapunji till 12 pm on Thursday and so all officials under the district have been asked to remain alert.

Shah Md Sajib Hossain, assistant meteorologist of Sylhet Weather Office, said the people Sylhet has been experiencing rains or thundershowers since Thursday (13 June) morning which will continue.

All have been asked to be aware of lightning strikes.
