Vehicular movement on Sylhet-Bholaganj road remained suspended for five hours on Tuesday (25 June) as the transport workers blocked the road protesting the arrest of three workers.

The workers blocked the Sylhet-Bholaganj road by placing their trucks haphazardly around 7 am at Boubazar, Tuker Bazar, Lasukhal, Thana Bazar and Borni area of Companiganj upazila, causing immense suffering to the tourists and patients.

Acting on secret information that some people were stealing ‘white stone’ from the Sada Pathor tourist spot, a team conducted a drive at Hightech Park around 11:30 pm on Monday and arrested three transport workers.

Protesting the arrest, the transport workers blocked the road and demanded withdrawal of Golam Dastagir, officer-in-charge of Companyganj Police Station and immediate release of the arrestees.

Kabir Ahmed, president of Companiganj Workers Union, said police arrested the truck drivers and workers without arresting the thieves involved in stealing stone.

On information, a team of police went to the spot and the vehicular movement on the road resumed at noon following police intervention.

However, the leaders of workers union gave a 24-hour ultimatum to release the workers by Wednesday and if their demand goes unheeded they will go for indefinite road blockade.
