River embankment collapse triggers flooding in Feni: one dead

Flood has struck multiple villages in Feni’s Fulgazi and Parshuram upazilas after heavy rains and a surge of torrents from upstream caused the Muhuri River embankment to break.

The embankment failed at three points, with the Muhuri River flowing 150 cm above its danger level. This led to widespread inundation, affecting the Feni-Parshuram road and Phulgazi Bazar. The flooding has left several areas underwater and caused significant disruption to daily life.

Last night, Md Mamun, a 25-year-old resident of Ghaniamora in Fulgazi upazila, was swept away by a strong current in the Kahua River while fishing. His body was later recovered.

The flood-protection embankment in Daulatpur collapsed, flooding Mali Pathor, Nilakkhi, and Paglirkul areas, said Jashim Uddin, Chairman of Chitholia union in Parshuram upazila. The situation is dire, and residents are struggling to cope, he added.

Harun Majumdar, Chairman of Fulgazi upazila, assured that all necessary preparations are in place to manage the crisis.

Shahrier Hasan, Executive Engineer of the Feni Water Development Board, highlighted the broader impact of the relentless rains. All rivers in the region have swollen due to the continuous torrential rainfall over the past several days, he explained.

There are concerns that more sections of the dam could collapse if the water levels continue to rise, posing further risks to the already devastated areas. Emergency services and local authorities are on high alert, monitoring the situation closely.
