The port city of Chattogram has been grappling with extensive waterlogging following relentless rainfall over the past three days, exacerbating hardships for its residents.

From early morning on Tuesday (July 2), both office commuters and students from various educational institutions have been significantly affected by the downpour.

Areas such as Chakbazar, Baklia, Chandgaon Kapasgola, and Halishahar have reported waterlogging, with streets inundated. The situation has led to decreased attendance in schools and disruptions in public transportation, causing frustration among commuters.

According to meteorologists at the Patenga Meteorological Department, the city has recorded a substantial 97 millimeters of rainfall in the last 24 hours alone. Today's rainfall totals stood at 27 millimeters from 6am to 12pm and 19 millimeters from 12pm to 3pm. Despite the inclement weather, daytime temperatures hovered between a high of 30.6 degrees Celsius and a low of 26.1 degrees Celsius.

Residents expressed concerns over the impact of the heavy rainfall on vehicular traffic, noting fewer vehicles on the roads in some areas and significant traffic jams in others. Low-lying areas have borne the brunt of waterlogging, although efforts are underway to alleviate the situation as the rainfall begins to taper off.

In response to the challenges posed by the weather, commuters have faced increased fares for rickshaws and CNG auto-rickshaws, compounding their difficulties in navigating the city. The local meteorological office has forecast that nighttime temperatures are likely to remain stable despite the ongoing rainfall.

The ongoing rainfall has underscored the urgent need for improved urban drainage systems to mitigate the recurring issue of waterlogging during the monsoon season. City authorities are urged to take proactive measures to address these challenges and alleviate the plight of residents affected by the adverse weather conditions.
