Flood situation worsened in Kurigram, around 80 thousand people marooned

Water level of all the 16 Rivers including the Dharla, Brahmaputra Teesta, Dudkumar, Fulkumar, Zinzeram and Sonavory is increasing due to rainfall and onrush of water from upstream.

Kurigram Water Development Board (WDB) sources said water level of the Brahmaputra River has been increased and was flowing 59 cm above danger mark at Chilmari, 51cm above at Noonkhawa and 65cm above danger mark at Hatea point under Ulipur upazila on Thursday (July 04). Around 80 thousand people have been marooned.

Houses, vegetable fields, jute fields are inundated. Some parts of roads have damaged and most of the rural roads are inundated, Fishes of many ponds washed away, tube wells inundated, a good number of educational institutes have been shut down as flood water entered in the those schools, fresh areas are being inundated daily, public representatives said.

Farmer Abdus Salam of Mogolbacha union under Kurigram Sadar upazila a total of 70% areas including standing crops, houses have been inundated by flood water. I am making a boat with local wood for movement, he said.

Chairman of Jatrapur union council Abdul Gafur told this correspondent that some 5000 houses are flood affected and 30000 persons have been marooned.UNO,Project Implement Officer, Assistant Commissioner (Land) have distributed 4 tons rice, edible oil and pulse among 400 families here yesterday.

A total of 80% people of Narayanpur union under Nageswari upazila are flood affected. Crop lands, seedlings and jute fields have gone under water. Video footage sent to UNO and DC, concern UP Chairman Mostafizur Rahman said.

Solaiman Ali chairman of Berubari UP under Nageswari upazila said all seedlings fields of the union have gone under flood water. Two roads have damaged. Water level of the River Brahmaputra and Dudkumari is increasing, he said.

Chairman of Baravita UP under Phulbari upazila Ataur Rahman said some 400 families are flood affected here. Some 25 houses of Purbo Dhaneram and Mekhly village have eroded recently.

Abdul Kaiyum, chairman of Bazra UP under Ulipur upazila said all the areas of his union have been inundated. Some 65 houses have eroded within the last seven days here, he said.

Chairman of Hatea UP under Ulipur upazila Saikhul Islam told that some 1600 families of his union are flood affected. Several educational institutes shut down as flood water entered there.

Chairman of Begumganj UP Bablu Miah told that the entire union (100%) is flood affected. The chairman is also affected. Men, women and children went on high lands with their belongings and cattle. Mazeda Begum wife of Mansur Ali of village Purbo Baladobarchar took shelter in a boat with her newly born baby (aged five days) as her houses are inundated by flood water. She will go to another place or her relative’s house, she said.

In addition the River side people of Chilmari, Roumari,Rajibpur and Rajarhat upazila are also in same phenomenon.

Kurigram District Relief and rehabilitation Officer (DRRO) Abdul Hye said 173 MT rice and taka 10 lakh have been distributed among flood victims in all the nine upazilas in the district. Some 600 MT rice and Taka 30 lakh are deposited which will be distributed periodically.
