Flood situation in char and river basin areas under four upazilas of the district remained unchanged as the water level of the Brahmaputra river was steady during the last 24 hours till Saturday (6 July) morning at 9 am.
The official of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) here said the Brahmaputra was flowing 86cm over the danger level at Fulchhari Ghat point of the district.
As a result, submerging chars located in the eastern side and river basins in the western side of 29 unions under Sundarganj, Sadar, Fulchhari and Saghata upazilas have been flooded making 67,729 families marooned.
Among them, some 5,200 families have been marooned in Sundarganj upazila, 39,889 in Sadar upazila, 7,490 in Fulchhari upazila and 15,150 in Saghata upazila of the district.
In order to mitigate the sufferings of the flood victims, the district and upazila administrations stood beside the flood-affected families with relief aid, office sources said.
A total of 3,050 packages of dry food, 165 tonnes of rice and Taka 10 lakh are being distributed to the flood victims at the initiative of the administration through involving the local government bodies, the sources added.
Besides, 265 tonnes of rice are in stock of the administration to face natural calamity, said an official of the district administration.
To face the ongoing flood, as many as 181 flood shelter centers have been
prepared in the upazilas, he also said.
Boats and speed boats have been kept ready to bring the flood victims to safer places, he said adding: "Adequate medical teams, livestock teams, agriculture teams and volunteer teams had been formed to conduct rescue operations."
United Nations' World Food programme (WFP) stood beside the flood victims under these four upazilas during the emergency period and distributed cash of Taka 10 crore to the 20,000 flood-affected people of the upazilas through their respective bKash account.
Each of the flood victims got Taka 5,000 from the WFP.
On the other hand, GanaUnnayan Kendra (GUK), a local voluntary non-government organisation, also distributed dignity kit materials (16 kinds) to the flood-affected families of Kunderpara char and its surrounding areas under Sadar upazila in the district on Sunday in cooperation with UNFPA, said the official of the administration.
DC Kazi Nahid Rasul said the district administration is on high alert about the flood and all sorts of preparations have been taken to deal with the flood situation smoothly.
