UP chairman shot dead in Khulna

Unidentified miscreants shot a Union Parishad (UP) chairman to death at Dumuria upazila in the district on Saturday (6 July).

The slain person was identified as Sheikh Rabiul Islam, 37, chairman of Sharafpur UP in Dumuria upazila and also a member of Dumuria upazila unit Awami League (AL).

Police and locals said Rabiul went to Dumuria the same day afternoon to join a meeting of AL.

Criminals gunned down him at the east side of a bridge of WAPDA at Gutudia village around 10:00 pm while he was returning home on motorcycle in the Khulna City, they said.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dumuria Police Station Sukanta Saha said Rabiul was returning home on his motorcycle after attending a meeting and completion some important works at Upazila Sadar.

Criminals shot Rabiul when he reached the WAPDA bridge on Saturday (6 July) night.

He was rushed to the local health complex and later was shifted to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) where on-duty doctor declared him dead, the police official said.

Police already started drives to arrest killers, he said, adding the reason behind the killing could not be known immediately.

While talking to BSS, Monir Hossain, brother-in-law of the deceased said Rabiul was the ex-deputy library secretary of district unit of Chhatra League and the member of Dumuria unit AL.
