A mobile court has fined five retailers in Meherpur for selling customs duty-evaded foreign and counterfeit cigarettes. The Meherpur district administration and the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection jointly operated the mobile court on Tuesday (9 July).
Around noon, the operation was conducted at Borobazar and Hotel Bazar areas in Meherpur city. At that time, five retailers were fined a total of 15,000 taka.
Sajal Ahmed, Assistant Director of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, Meherpur District, said, "A raid was conducted at Hotel Market and Borobazar of Meherpur city under the leadership of Abir Hossain, Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate of Meherpur District Administration. The court imposed a fine of Tk 12,000 on five shops for selling foreign brand cigarettes by evading duty and for improper packaging of cigarettes."
Sajal Ahmed also stated, "Among the seized cigarettes, there are domestically produced brands such as Barbi, Dhaka, Peacock, AC Gold, Purbani, Top Twenty, and illegally imported and counterfeit foreign brands Oris, Derby, and Royal. The haul includes 30,000 domestically produced cigarettes, 400 foreign cigarettes, and 3,800 counterfeit cigarettes." He added that legal action will be taken regarding this incident.
