Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Dr. Selina Hyat Ivy said Narayanganj is basically a 'Blue City'. There are 26 canals and numerous ponds. But we do not understand the dignity of our environment.

For 21 years, we heard that work is being done on Shitalakshya,Buriganga, Turag, and Balu rivers. Enough is enough, we must stop now it is time to implementation and ordered fines.

She said this while speaking as the chief guest at a seminar titled 'What can be done to prevent industrial pollution in rivers' at Ali Ahmed Chunka Nagar Library and Auditorium in the city on Tuesday (July 9) afternoon.

The seminar was organized by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA) and Association for Land Reform in Bangladesh (ALRD). Chief executive of Bela Sayeda Rizwana Choudhury had conducted the programme.

It was informed in the event that there are more than 2000 small and big industrial factories on both sides of Shitalakshya river covering 110 km. The chemically untreated effluents of these industries are directly polluting the Shitalakshya river. In 2022, the Department of Environment published a list of 112 industrial plants that do not use ETP.

Narayanganj City Corporation Chief Executive Officer Zakir Hossain, Environment Department District Office Deputy Director Ferdous Anwar, Narayanganj Citizens Committee General Secretary Zahidul Haque Dipu also spoke at this time.
