In Chilmari, Kurigram, over 400 families in a water-submerged ward received relief assistance meant for only 40 families. This aid was provided in two phases: once before the flood started and again two days ago.
In Harinabon and Sonari Para of Ward No. 3 of Ramna Model Union in Chilmari Upazila, roads remain submerged. Even as the water recedes, most families are still under water. More than 400 to 500 families reside in this ward.
Upon visiting the ward, it was observed that there is knee-deep water on the roads, and in some places, water is waist-deep. Despite the water level decreasing, most homes in the area are still flooded. For the past five to six days, over 400 families have been living in water. Although the water level in the Brahmaputra River has decreased, the water in this area is receding slowly. In this situation, the area will remain waterlogged for another week.
According to the ward's UP member Rafiqul Islam, the Upazila administration provided relief assistance to only 40 families in two phases in this ward.
Several residents, including Rina, Anicha, Rahima, and Marzina Begum, mentioned that their homes have been waterlogged for the past five to six days. They are very worried about their young children. There are problems cooking food, as both their houses and yards are flooded. The member just checks on them, but no assistance has been received so far.
Ward UP member Md. Rafiqul Islam stated that there are around 400 families waterlogged in his ward. He provided relief assistance to 40 families in two phases, which is insufficient. He urges everyone to visit and see the condition of the people in this area. He checks on these people daily but cannot provide them with any relief due to the lack of allocation.
Regarding this, Upazila Project Implementation Officer Md. Mosharraf Hossain said that emergency relief assistance will be provided to 50 families in that area this evening.
