Roads blocked, police vehicles set on fire

Thousands of students took to the streets in Gazipur's Chandra, Mauna, Shimultali, and other areas on Saturday (3 August) around 11:30 AM to protest against discrimination, under the banner of the anti-discrimination student movement. The protests involved various schools and colleges in the region. Students chanted slogans against the police during the demonstrations.

In Kaliakair, Gazipur, thousands of students protested on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in the Chandra area. Meanwhile, students from various schools and colleges in the Mauna and surrounding areas of Gazipur's Sripur blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. The situation escalated into a clash between students and police in Mauna, leading to the students vandalizing a police box and setting it on fire along with two police vehicles. To bring the situation under control, the police resorted to tear gas.

According to police, students, and local residents, around 12 PM, hundreds of students from various schools and colleges gathered at Chandra Trimor area in Kaliakair, Gazipur, to demand the implementation of nine points raised by the anti-discrimination student movement. They blocked the Dhaka-Tangail and Chandra-Nabinagar roads, chanting anti-government slogans.

Simultaneously, leaders and activists of the ruling party, the Awami League, gathered at their party office in Chandra to observe a previously announced "Mourning Procession".

In Sripur's Mauna Chourasta area, as part of their pre-announced program, students gathered at the Palli Bidyut intersection around 11:30 AM. They marched with sticks, chanting slogans against the police and government. They proceeded to Mauna Chourasta, where they vandalized three police boxes belonging to Mauna Highway, Gazipur District Police, and Sripur Police Station. They set fire to the Gazipur District Police box and vandalized various banners and festoons in the vicinity. The enraged students also damaged several vehicles, including two police vehicles.

In Shimultali, Gazipur Metropolitan area, students from various schools and colleges began protesting, blocking the Jaydevpur-Shimultali regional highway. They chanted slogans demanding the implementation of their nine points.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shahadat Hossain of Nawjor Highway Police Station stated that hundreds of students gathered in the Chandra area around 12 PM. They blocked the Dhaka-Tangail highway and began protesting. So far, no clashes or chases have been reported in this area.
