Female students, along with other volunteers, have taken to cleaning the sidewalls of a four-lane highway in Noakhali. The efforts took place on Saturday (10 August), in Chowmuhani, Maijdee Court, and Soanimuri areas of the district.

This afternoon, during a visit to the site, it was observed that female students from various colleges and universities were actively involved in cleaning activities. They were seen washing, collecting plastic bags, and removing waste from the roadside. Additionally, some students were managing vehicle movement to ensure smooth traffic flow.

Despite their significant efforts, there was no visible presence of traffic police or other law enforcement officials. The students were also busy cleaning up used paper, bottles, and removing posters from walls. Sumi Akther, a student from SA College, shared with our correspondent, “I willingly joined this initiative along with my classmates and senior peers. It is very fulfilling to contribute to our country’s improvement.”

Students were also seen erasing wall writings and painting flowers to beautify the area. When asked about their meals, they explained that they collect funds among themselves, and sometimes receive assistance from local businesses.

However, local residents have expressed concerns about the deteriorating law and order situation. Reports of miscreants setting fires, looting, and other criminal activities have surfaced in the absence of police presence.

In response to the deteriorating situation, students have taken on the dual role of maintaining traffic order and cleaning the roads. Armed with brooms and spades, some students even waded through knee-deep dirty water that had accumulated over time.

CNG auto-rickshaw drivers, including Anower Hossain, reported a positive change, stating, “We are now driving our vehicles without facing any illegal tolls or hassles.”

The students' selfless efforts highlight their dedication to their community and underscore the importance of civic engagement in times of need.
