Continuous rainfall and incoming floodwaters from India have caused the water levels of five rivers in Moulvibazar district to rise above the danger marks. The Kushiara, Manu, Dhalai, and Juri rivers are flowing dangerously high, resulting in the flooding of over fifty villages. Areas such as the district headquarters, Rajnagar, Kamalganj, Kulaura, Juri, and Barlekha have been severely affected, leaving over 150,000 people stranded by floodwaters. With water levels continuing to rise, panic is spreading among the residents.
On Wednesday (August 21) the Bangladesh Water Development Board in Moulvibazar reported that the water levels have surged due to low pressure in the sea and heavy rainfall in India.
In Juri River, the water level is nearly 174 cm above the danger mark, while in the Dhalai River, it is 8 cm above. The Manu River at Chandnighat is 70 cm above the danger mark, and at the railway bridge, it is 105 cm above.
Additionally, the Kushiara River at Sherpur Point in Moulvibazar is nearing the danger level. The ongoing heavy rain over the past three days has caused water levels in haors (wetlands) and rivers to rise, submerging houses.
Md. Javed Iqbal, the Executive Engineer of the Moulvibazar Water Development Board, expressed grave concern, stating that the water levels are rising alarmingly. Floodwaters are breaching river embankments and inundating localities. Despite efforts to control the situation by placing geo-bags, several locations have witnessed breaches in the riverbanks.
Meanwhile, a special meeting of the Moulvibazar District Disaster Management Committee is scheduled to take place at 3:30 PM today in the conference room of the District Commissioner's office.
