In solidarity with the anti-discrimination student movement and to honor those who lost their lives in the cause, students in Belaichhari are transforming the town's walls into vibrant canvases through graffiti art, just like in other parts of the country.
A visit to the area reveals that students are painting various walls, including those near Paltan Ghat, the food warehouse, the boundary walls of the Upazila Parishad Chairman's residence, and the UNO's residence, as well as other dilapidated walls across the upazila. Despite the ongoing heavy rain, they are not stopping. Using tarps for cover, they continue to depict the stories of the martyrs of the movement and the various issues faced by the hill areas through their graffiti.
There is no sign of fatigue among them; everyone is enthusiastically participating in the painting. Some are even singing to the tune of guitars to encourage their fellow artists. Besides college and university students, school students from various institutions in the upazila are also taking part in the effort. Their one wish is to see Belaichhari Upazila and the entire Chattogram Hill Tracts revitalized and beautified like other parts of the country.
Speaking anonymously, some students mentioned that they are creating these graffiti artworks in support of the anti-discrimination student movement and to remember those who sacrificed their lives. Additionally, they are using graffiti to highlight the unresolved issues in the Chattogram Hill Tracts, particularly land disputes, education, health, social, economic, and political problems. Their hope is to eliminate all forms of discrimination and rebuild the Chattogram Hill Tracts anew, just like the rest of the country.
It was learned that they started this graffiti project on Monday, August 19. Due to continuous rain, the work has been somewhat delayed, and they plan to continue painting for a few more days.
