In Shahrashti Upazila of Chandpur, nearly 50,000 people have been stranded due to rising water from upstream sources over the past two days. Approximately 500 families have taken refuge in various shelters across the Upazila.
From morning to noon on Monday (August 26), it was observed that most homes in the villages of Suchipara North Union are submerged, with roads and pathways also inundated. Fish enclosures and livestock shelters have also been affected.
At Suchipara Degree College, a shelter has been set up where over 250 people are taking refuge. They have been staying there for the past three days with their families and have brought along livestock and poultry.
Zakir Hossain Byapari stated that they had to move to the shelter with his elderly mother and family as their home was flooded. He is worried about when the water will recede.
Housewife Tania Akhtar mentioned that she and her children have been staying at the shelter for the past two days as their home has been completely submerged.
Mahin Hossain from the neighboring village of Pathair said that all homes in the north and south parts of their village are submerged, and no assistance has arrived yet. They are hoping for government aid.
Nazrul Islam from the same village reported that water has been rising in their area for four days, with the overflow from the Keshar and Feni rivers contributing to the situation. The water level in the Dakatia River is also not decreasing.
Fayez Ahmed, a member of the volunteer organization ‘Sajag,’ said that they have been distributing food supplies to those stranded over the past few days. He urges everyone to support the affected people.
Shahrashti Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Md. Yasir Arafat stated that around 50,000 people in six southern unions are stranded. More than 500 families are currently in shelters, and the number is increasing due to rising water levels. He calls for more support from others.
Meanwhile, Chandpur District Commissioner (DC) Kamrul Hasan and other administrative officials visited the flood shelter at Suchipara Degree College in the afternoon.
