After the government change on August 5 of this year, policing activities were suspended for several days. During this period, the Baniachong Police Station in Habiganj was set on fire and completely burned down. Subsequently, significant changes in police leadership occurred across the country, including in Habiganj. At the end of August, Md. Rezaul Haque Khan assumed the role of Superintendent of Police in the district.
To assess the overall law and order situation in the district, the newly appointed Superintendent of Police held a meeting with journalists in his office at 12 PM on Wednesday, September 4. Journalists working in the district attended the meeting. At the beginning of the session, prayers were offered for the souls of those who were martyred in the movement to build a new, equitable Bangladesh.
In his speech, Superintendent of Police Md. Rezaul Haque Khan stated, "After joining in Habiganj, I have interacted with police members at various levels, encouraging them to learn from past mistakes and to work anew as friends of the people. I have inspected the severely damaged Baniachong Police Station."
"Normal operations have started to resume in every police station across the district. We are determined to establish the police as a professional, accountable, public-friendly, and politically neutral disciplined force. In short, we want to work transparently with a positive mindset," he added.
Addressing the journalists, the Superintendent of Police said, "At the dawn of this new chapter in the country, the relationship between the police and journalists, who are the fourth pillar of the state, should be complementary. I seek your full cooperation in delivering and reporting objective news, so that we can restore the rule of law, human rights, and the public's trust in the police. I am committed to working towards creating a district police force that is 100% free from bribery and corruption."
During the meeting, journalists informed the Superintendent of Police about various issues in Habiganj. They also urged him to ensure that, unlike previous officials, his efforts lead to real changes rather than being limited to speeches. Also present at the meeting were Additional Superintendents of Police Shamsul Islam Shams and Aminul Islam, and Police Inspector Md. Kamrul Hasan.
The meeting featured speeches from Habiganj Press Club President Russell Chowdhury, General Secretary Abu Hasib Khan Chowdhury Pavel, former President and Freedom Fighter Golam Mustafa Rafiq, Shoaib Chowdhury, Fazlur Rahman, and Mohammad Nahiz.
