12 burnt in Sitakunda shipyard explosion

A devastating explosion occurred at a shipyard named SN Corporation in Sitakunda, Chittagong, during shipbreaking operations, leaving at least 12 workers severely burned.

The incident took place around 12:30 PM on Saturday (September 7) in the Kashem Jute Mills area of the upazila. Upon receiving the news, two units of Kumira Fire Service rushed to the scene to bring the fire under control.

The injured individuals are identified as Ahmad Ullah, Mohammad Al-Amin, Mohammad Borkot, Habil Ahmed, Mohammad Niamul Haque, Anwar Hossain, Abul Kashem, Mohammad Jahangir, Mohammad Khairul, Mohammad Sagar, Mohammad Rafique, and Mohammad Saiful. They have all been admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

An official from the Agrabad Fire Service and Civil Defense control room stated that the explosion occurred with a loud bang while shipbreaking was in progress at the SM Corporation yard in Kumira, Sitakunda. After the explosion, the fire spread rapidly. Upon receiving the call, two units from the fire service rushed to the scene to extinguish the blaze.

Brigadier General Mohammad Taslim Uddin, Director of Chittagong Medical College Hospital, said, "So far, 12 people have been brought to the hospital in critical condition due to the explosion at the shipyard in Sitakunda. They are being treated in the Burn Unit (Unit 36), and many have suffered burns covering 80-90% of their bodies."
