Two people were killed and 20 others injured in a clash between two groups of local people of two Mohollas at Khoarpar intersection in Sherpur district town on Monday night.

The deceased were identified as Mizan Mia, 35, a trolley worker and son of Azhar Ali and Srabon Mia, 32, son of Mintu Mia. Both of them were residents of Gauripur Moholla.

Jahangir Alam, officer-in-charge of Sadar police station, said a tense situation has been prevailing among the residents of Gouripur and Khoarpar over taking control of the CNG stand, Trolley stand, lease of mobile carts and extortion after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government since August 5.

As a sequel to the enmity, the supporters of two groups engaged in heated arguments around 11 pm and both groups attacked each other with sticks and lethal weapons.

A chase and counter chase took place among them, triggering a clash that left 20 people injured. A number of shops and restaurants were vandalised during the incident.

At one stage, the supporters of Khoarpar beat Mizan and Srabon up mercilessly, leaving them critically injured.

Later, they were taken to Sadar Hospital where the doctors declared Mizan dead. Srabon was shifted to Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital from where he was referred to Dhaka. But he died on the way to Dhaka.

A tense situation has been prevailing in the area over the clash.

Army and additional police forces have been deployed in the area to avert further trouble.
