Despite heightened security and assurances from labor leaders and local politicians, unrest continues in Ashulia industrial area, leading to the closure of 22 garment factories on Wednesday.
From early morning, workers arrived at their respective factories, only to find some of them closed. In those that remained open, production proceeded without incident, although a few workers left unexpectedly.
Superintendent Mohammad Sarwar Alam of Ashulia Industrial Police-1 confirmed that while many workers reported for duty, the recent factory closures have disrupted garment production.
The closures over the past few days have significantly impacted production, he noted.
Adding to the tension, workers from one factory blocked the Nabinagar-Chandra highway this morning to press their demands, causing severe traffic congestion, according to Sarwar Alam.
The situation in Ashulia remains tense as authorities take action to quell the unrest. Last night, members of a joint force arrested an individual accused of inciting disturbances in the garment sector. In response, additional police have been deployed in front of factories to prevent further incidents, with army and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) units also patrolling the area.
