Two brothers were killed and five others injured in a clash between two factions of BNP over establishing dominance in Lohagara of Narail on Wednesday morning.

The deceased were identified as Miran Sheikh, 48, and his younger brother Zia Sheikh (40), sons of Samad Sheikh of Char Mallikpur area under the upazila. The identities of the injured could not be known immediately.

Police and locals said there had long been a dispute over establishing dominance between Mahmud Khan, president of Lohagara Upazila Jubo Dal and Ferdous Sheikh, joint general secretary of the district unit of BNP, in Char Mallikpur area.

On Wednesday morning, Mahmud’s supporters carried out an attack on rivals, leaving at least seven people critically injured, they said.

The injured were taken to Lohagara Health Complex where physicians declared the brothers dead upon arrival while the remaining victims were undergoing treatment.

Lohagara Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed the incident.

Additional police personnel have been deployed to avoid any further trouble, he said, adding that efforts are underway to arrest those involved in the incident.
