Environmental, travel, and aviation content creator Ashraful Alam planted 500 palm seeds in his village to protect against lightning and natural disasters. The two-day-long palm seed planting program in Dashany Tobga village, Chatkhil upazila, Noakhali district, covered an area of about 2 km and ended on Saturday (November 2). Mission Green Bangladesh was partner in this initiative.
Ashraful Alam, Content Creator and an environmental activist and the initiator of the palm seed planting project, stated that the number of deaths due to lightning in our country is increasing day by day. In addition to humans, many cattle are killed every year by lightning. We have taken the initiative to plant palm trees to help reduce these accidents. He also said, "When we eat this palm (Taal), we can plant those seeds around our homes, along the roadside, or share them with others. Let's plant palm seeds to protect the natural balance, safeguard against lightning, and make our surroundings a little greener."
Ahsan Roni, convenor of Mission Green Bangladesh, said, "We want to make the whole country green. If the country is green, the risk of climate change will be significantly reduced, and our country will regain its lost form. We will have a green Bangladesh, and we will also be able to breathe fresh air."
Jannatul Ferdous Onie, a resident of the village and the author of the book titled ‘Sorol Ongko’, stated, "Planting palm seeds on both sides of the road will prevent soil erosion, thus protecting the balance of nature. Palm trees have been used for making house poles and hand fans for hundreds of years. Palm leaf fans are part of our Bengali heritage, and a variety of products are made from the fiber of palm tree branches." She also mentioned, "The number of palm trees is gradually decreasing, so we need to plant more palm seeds to maintain the health of our environment."
Incidentally, the increase in temperature is causing global warming each year. In recent years, this warming, especially in our beloved Bangladesh, has made it increasingly difficult for people to live. While various measures and programs worldwide to address climate change are evident, they are insufficient in our country. Environmentalists and climatologists are emphasizing tree planting to reduce these risks. Furthermore, in recent years, the number of deaths due to lightning has been rapidly increasing across the country. In this situation, tree lovers and environmentalists are advocating for the planting of special palm trees in plantations.
