Bangladesh Nationalist Party's standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury on Saturday said that "no government without public representation will understand the people, will not understand the people's suffering."

He made these remarks while addressing a rally as chief guest at Kazir Dewri area in Chattogram on Saturday afternoon. Chattogram city, north and south district units of BNP organised the rally to mark the national revolution and solidarity day.

Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said "to understand, one must go to the people, stay with the people, and understand the people's sorrows and hardships."

"The country should return to democracy. Through democracy, the people will elect their representatives through their votes, who will go to parliament, form the government and be accountable to the people. No unaccountable government can do good for Bangladesh," he said.

"We had to give our lives in the movement, our party activists had to flee their homes, lose their jobs, businesses, become crippled, and went to jail. How many of you are there? It's difficult to count! We don't want to count. We wanted everyone to join together to get out Sheikh Hasina," said Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.

"Due to the unity of the entire country under the leadership of Tareque Rahman, Sheikh Hasina fled. If that background had not been created, if that situation had not been created, there would have been no opportunity to push Sheikh Hasina away. Now we hear many stories, there is no end to the stories of Sheikh Hasina's downfall. Every day we hear new stories. They say they did this, they did that. When we were on the streets for 15 years, giving our lives, being victims of disappearances and killings, going to jail again and again; I didn't see these stories of yours then. None of you were with us then," Amir Khasru said.

"The parliament that will be formed through elections will make decisions. The nation wants to see their elected representatives. They want to see their elected government," he added.

"Sheikh Hasina has taken away the voting rights of the people of Bangladesh, imprisoned the nation's leader Khaleda Zia by filing false cases, and persecuted, tortured, killed, disappeared, and imprisoned more than seven lakh BNP leaders and activists. Through this, she created an insecure nation again for the people of Bangladesh. There, the nation's leader Begum Khaleda Zia stood up again. For standing up, she had to go to jail, she had to fight for her life, she was pushed to the brink of death without medical treatment," said Amir Khasru.

Pointing at the party activists, Amir Khasru said, "You have to be disciplined. Those who can do politics in a disciplined manner have a future. There will be no place for unruly, extortionists, occupiers, and land grabbers in BNP."

Chattogram city unit BNP's convener Arshad Ullah presided over and member secretary Nazimur Rahman conducted the rally while special guests BNP chairperson's adviser Golam Akbar Khandaker, BNP's organising secretary Mahbuber Rahman Shamim, assistant organising secretary Harunur Rashid and Barrister Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin and former member secretary of Chattogram city unit BNP Abul Hashem Bakkar, among others, addressed the rally.

A procession was brought out at 4:00pm after the rally. The procession ended at New Market circle after parading to Kazir Dewri, Love Lane, and Amtala. Thousands of leaders and activists from Chattogram city and different upazilas participated at the rally.
