Leaders of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Monday demanded to launch a crash programme to control prevalence of dengue fever as the city turned into a breeding place of mosquitoes.

The Khulna City Corporation (KCC) should launch the programme soon as the lives of city dwellers have become miserable due to increase of mosquito infestation in the city, they said.

Central Information Affair Secretary of BNP Azizul Bari Helal, Student Affair Secretary Rakibul Islam Bakul, Convener of City Unit BNP Shafiqul Alam Mona and General Secretary Shafiqul Alam Tuhin made the demand in a statement here.

Convener of BNP Media cell Mizanur Rahman issued a press release to this end last night.
The BNP leaders said that the city became a breeding point of mosquitoes as the immediate past KCC Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque and some corrupt employees of the waste management department did not take any measures to clean most of the canals and drains in the KCC area.

As a result, the numbers of death and dengue infection case have been increasing at an alarming rate this year, they said.

The dengue claimed 15 lives and infected as many as 2,626 people in Khulna this year, according to the information of the Department of Health.
