A woman was hacked to death allegedly by her son as she refused to give money to buy drugs in the West Barua Para area of the district town in the early hours of today.

Later, the boy Hossain Mohammad Abid, 28, surrendered himself to police of Cox's Bazar Sadar Police Station around 2:30am, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the concerned police station said.

The deceased was Anwara Begum Meri, 55, wife of Niaz Ahmed, resident of the Paschim Barua Para area under the district town. According to locals, Abid was addicted to drugs for a long time. He often tortured his mother physically and mentally to buy drugs, the OC said.

After the incident, Abid locked the door of the house from outside and went to the police station to inform the police. Being informed, police rushed to the spot and recovered the body from the house and sent it to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue. Legal action is under process, the OC added.
