A bird hunter was detained on Tuesday night in Paikgacha, Khulna. The individual was fined tk. 5,000 under the Wildlife (Preservation and Security) Act and the seized items were destroyed. The incident occurred in Betbunia village of the upzila.
According to sources, upon receiving information about bird hunting using sound boxes in the Betbunia wetlands of Soladana Union, an operation was carried out under the directive of the Upzila Nirbahi Officer.
The team led by Upzila Ansar and VDP Trainer Altaf Hossain, Union Leader Faisal Hossain and Ward Leader Faisal Sardar caught a hunter red-handed. The hunter identified as Husain Sardar (50), son of Abdul Majid Sardar from Betbunia village, was found with three sound boxes emitting bird calls, four nets, a birdcage, and nine hunted migratory birds.
On Wednesday, Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Md. Iftekharul Islam Shamim visited the site and fined the hunter under the Wildlife (Preservation and Security) Act. The seized items, including the sound boxes, nets, and cages, were publicly destroyed, and the nine captured migratory birds were released into the wild.
Speaking on the matter, the Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Md. Iftekharul Islam Shamim stated that such operations by the upzila administration will continue in the interest of public welfare.
