The Chattogram City Corporation on Tuesday informed that they dismissed executive engineer (electricity) Jhulon Kumar Das, following allegations of turning off streetlights during the anti-discrimination student movement.

The termination order, signed by CCC mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain, was issued by the Secretariat’s Division on Sunday. The dismissal was carried out under section 64(2) of the Chattogram City Corporation Employee Service Rules, 2019, according to the official notice.

However, Jhulon will receive three months’ salary as per the rules, the notice mentioned.

Earlier, during the anti-discrimination student protests from August 3 to 5, Jhulon Kumar Das was accused of aiding violence by keeping streetlights off at night, which allegedly facilitated the killing of students and oppression of protesters.

Jhulon was suspended on August 14 after these allegations were brought to the CCC’s temporary headquarters in Tiger Pass by student movement coordinators.

Moreover, allegations of corruption, mismanagement, and inefficiency in a CCC project worth Tk 261 crore for modernizing the city’s streetlight system have also been reported against him.
