Police on Monday informed that they arrested Mithun Chakraborty, a leader of the Chattogram Metropolitan Swechchhasebak League, on charges of attack on students and damaging vehicles during an anti-discrimination student protest at Sholoshahar 2 No Gate under Panchlaish Police Station.
Mithun was detained on Sunday from Sultanpur in Feni district, Panchlaish Police confirmed.
At a press briefing on Monday at the CMP media center, deputy commissioner (crime and operations) Md Rois Uddin said "Mithun, who is the president of Chawkbazar Ward Swechchhasebak League, was involved in firing weapons, detonating crude bombs, and vandalizing vehicles in front of the Chattogram Shopping Complex on July 16."
"Photos of firing during the protests in July and August had circulated widely on social and mainstream media, drawing public attention to his actions," he said.
Rois Uddin added that Mithun was a close associate of known extortionists, illegal occupiers of government land, and former Chawkbazar Ward Councillor Nur Mostafa Tinu.
“During primary interrogation, Mithun admitted to using weapons to suppress the student movement,” Rais Uddin said.
Mohammad Solaiman, officer-in-charge of Panchlaish Police Station, said Mithun was produced before a court and police would seek his remand for further investigation.
