A Chattogram court on Tuesday ordered re-investigation into a case filed against former officer-in-charge (OC) of Panchlaish police station Nazim Uddin Majumder and former sub-inspector Abdul Aziz on charges of torturing a relative of a patient in police custody.

The Chattogram Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sarkar Hasan Shahriar passed the order following the victim's application.

The plaintiff's lawyer Zia Habib Ahsan said that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police filed a petition with the court against the final report submitted by the police on charges of torturing Mostakim in police custody. When the application was rejected, an appeal was filed in the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's court.

The Metropolitan Sessions Judge sent it back to the Metropolitan Magistrate's court for hearing. After the hearing, the court accepted the plaintiff's application and ordered the PBI to re-investigate the case, the lawyer said.

According to court sources, patients and their relatives blocked the streets infront of Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) at the beginning of 2023 to protest the increase in dialysis fees. As part of the movement that lasted for several days.

According to the case statement, Mostakim underwent dialysis for his mother for seven years. The patient's relatives along with him protested against the increase in the price of dialysis. On January 10, 2023 they gathered at the main gate of CMCH and formed a human chain. A team of police, led by Panchlaish police station OC Nazim Uddin came there and attacked the protesters. At one stage, OC Nazim arrested Mostakim and beat him and later OC Nazim took Mostakim to the police station and beat him again.
