Three people, including a woman, have been arrested from Moulvibazar in connection with the murder of Golam Rabbani Tipu, a former councillor of the Khulna City Corporation. The arrestees are Ritu,24, daughter of Md. Selim Akand of Dewan Mollapara in Khulna, Sheikh Shahriar Islam Pappu ,27, son of Jamal Sheikh from the same area and Golam Rasul, 25, son of Md. Haidar Sardar Adu of Madhya Karigarpara.
The accused chose Cox's Bazar as a suitable place to carry out the murder, said Cox's Bazar Superintendent of Police Rahmat Ullah at a press briefing on Wednesday.
The police super said Sheikh Shahriar Islam Pappu, nephew of Huji Shahidul, an extremist leader of the Purba Banglar Communist Party in Khulna, planned the murder to avenge the 2013 killing of his uncle.
Tipu was allegedly involved in Huji Shahidul's murder. One of the other accused in that case was similarly murdered in 2022, which further fueled enmity and resentment in Pappu, he said.
Local dominance and influence were also factors behind the killing, added SP Rahmat Ullah. After committing the crime, the suspects fled the scene, leaving the weapon behind, which police have since recovered, he said.
Golam Rabbani Tipu, a leader of the Swechasebak League and a former councilor, was shot dead on January 9. The following day, Tipu's brother-in-law Md. Yunus Ali Sheikh filed a case at Cox's Bazar Sadar Model Police Station against unidentified people.
