The Faridpur chapter of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement has issued a five-day ultimatum to arrest Golam Nasir, president of district unit of Awami Sramik League, and others accused in multiple cases over attacks and killings during the July mass uprising. They issued the ultimatum at a press conference in front of Punak Restaurant in the district town on Sunday morning.
Sohail Rana, one of the student coordinators in Faridpur, addressed the press conference. On January 16, Nasir, and Jubayer Jakir, vice president of the district unit of Sramik League, attended the extended meeting of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation at Engineers' Institute of Bangladesh (IEB) in Dhaka though they are facing several cases, including murders, he said.
A video footage showing the duo accused were addressing the event and went viral on social media, triggering criticism in the district, the coordinator said, claiming that the accused have been roaming at large in the district but law enforcers are yet to take any action.
"Nasir led armed attacks on student protesters (during the July uprising)," said Sohail Rana. "Despite multiple cases against him, Nasir and his associates are roaming freely. If they are not apparently arrested within five days, we will begin an indefinite hunger strike in front of the Superintendent of Police's office," he threatened.
Faridpur Additional Superintendent of Police Shailen Chakma said many involved in attacks on Anti-Discrimination Student Movements have already been arrested.
Police are actively working to arrest the remaining suspects, he said. Student coordinators Abrar Nadim Itu, Nirab Imtiaz Shanto, and Mehedi Hasan Hridoy were, among others present at the press conference.
