12 held for trying to rob houses posing as DGFI members

Police have arrested 12 people in connection with a robbery attempt at a house in Khulshi area of Chattogram city.

They were arrested with the help of local people around 12 am on Friday.

The arrestees were identified as Md Wazed Rakib, 36, Md Hossain, 40, Md Rokon, 39, Md Osman, 40, Mohiuddin, 45, Abdul Sabur, 37, Md Rubel Hossain, 26, Md Yakub Ali, 39, Mozahar Alam, 55, Md Harun-or-Rashid, 36, Abdul Mannan, 39, and Shawkat Akbar Emon, 31.

According to police sources, a gang of robbers came in front of Sanmar Royal Reach building on Khulshi Road No. 3 and identified themselves as members of detective agency DGFI to the security guards. They broke into the house of Gias Uddin Ansari, former managing director of Jamuna Oil Company Limited, on the eighth floor. Then they went inside and started looting. Gias Uddin was not at home at that time.

It is also known that the people of the neighboring flats came to know about the incident and called the National Emergency Service 999. On information, Khulshi police arrested 12 of them, but two of them fled in a microbus. At that time, a microbus, a steel peg, three toy pistols, identity cards of intelligence agencies, 25 empty sacks, two ropes and two towels were recovered from their possession.

Rais Uddin, deputy commissioner (crime) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police, said 12 people were detained in this connection. Among the detainees are foreign returnees, former bankers, sand suppliers and shop employees. Legal action is being taken against them.
