Two people were killed and three others injured in a collision between a bus and an auto-van in Raiganj upazila of Sirajganj on Sunday afternoon. The accident occurred around 3pm at the bypass area of Chandaikona bus stand on the Dhaka-Bogura highway, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdur Rouf of Hatikumrul Highway Police Station.
The deceased were identified as Rahijul Islam, 59, a teacher of Chandaikona Bahumukhi High School, and Saheb Ali, 60, an auto-van driver from Dhankunthi village in Sherpur upazila of Bogura district.
According to police and locals, the victims were traveling to attend a funeral prayer in an auto-van when a Bogura-bound bus, Shah Fateh Ali, rammed their vehicle and fled the scene. All four passengers of the auto-van, including the driver, sustained critical injuries.
Locals rescued the injured and rushed them to Bogura's Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital. However, Rahijul and Saheb Ali succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment around 5:30pm.
The bodies have been sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy and efforts are underway to trace the bus and its driver, added the OC.
