In a 4-year-old case, the court has sentenced a husband to death for killing his pregnant wife for dowry. On Monday (February 3), Judge Ferdous Ara of the Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 delivered the verdict. The court also fined the convict, Suman, Tk 5 lakh.

Kafil Uddin, a bench assistant of the court, said that the court ordered the death penalty and a fine of Tk 5 lakh to the accused, Suman, under the Women and Child Repression Prevention Act, as the allegation of killing his wife and unborn child was proved.

It is learned that Md. Suman (35) is a resident of Mirzarhat area of Bhujpur police station in Fatikchhari upazila. Suman, who had married several times, fell in love with Moni Akhter and married her four years ago. Although Suman was given a motorcycle and Tk 50,000 in cash as dowry at the time of marriage, he used to torture his wife repeatedly for dowry. On October 31, 2021, Suman took his 8-month pregnant wife to his house and demanded money. When he did not get the money, Suman brutally tortured his wife. He then fled leaving her in critical condition at Chittagong Medical College (CMC) Hospital. His wife died on November 25 after staying in the hospital for 26 days.

It is also known that Moni Akhter's brother, Md. Abbas, filed a case on November 27, 2021. RAB-7 arrested the accused from Bayezid Bostami area on April 16, 2022. The court framed charges against him on September 4, 2022. The court delivered the verdict after hearing the testimony of 13 people.
