The Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain has directed to take the work to reduce waterlogging at a visible level before the rainy season to keep the waterlogging at a tolerable level during the upcoming monsoon.

Mayor Shahadat Hossain made the announcement at a coordination meeting on waterlogging with the engineering, clean department and regional executive officers at Tigerpass CCC office on Tuesday.

The mayor said the regional executive officers along with the officials of engineering and clean departments will identify the reasons for waterlogging in their respective areas. Each regional executive officer has been made into six special teams of 120 people with 20 workers. You will use these teams to clean the dirt from the service drains of the area. Every day, team members will collect videos and pictures of whether they are working, where they are doing it, what they are doing.

Besides, he will make a list of the community centers, restaurants, hospitals, markets and other big institutions in their respective areas who are creating waterlogging by dumping garbage everywhere. Letters have already been sent to provide 7 magistrates. We will bring the magistrates under legal punishment including fines based on that list. The interim government has allocated Tk 5 crore to reduce waterlogging in Chattogram city. The money allocated for this allocation should be spent in a planned manner.

Regarding the installation of signboards to create public awareness, the mayor said public awareness signboards will be set up beside various canals and drains across 41 wards of the city. For this, you will provide a list of suitable areas. Since the CDA is implementing the 'Eradication' project, he held a meeting with them. A joint decision should be taken with the district administration and the Water Development Board to work together to reduce waterlogging. Use scavengers in places where the use of a scavenger is required. And use workers in places where manual digging is required. Ensure the presence of clean workers.

The mayor said Chittagong has many problems, one of the main problems is "waterlogging". People are very helpless when it rains more due to waterlogging. The city is flooded. The main reason for waterlogging in Chittagong city is the filling up of canals. Due to the construction of illegal buildings within the boundaries of the canal, its width decreases and the ability to remove rain and flood water decreases. Specific places for dumping dirt in a planned way and canal renovation work should be completed quickly.

At the meeting, the regional executive officers said, We visited different areas and found that a lot of dirt has accumulated in the canals and drains, which is one of the reasons for waterlogging." Cleaning activities are also being hampered due to illegal market sitting. For this, action should be taken against illegal establishments across the city with the help of magistrates. It is particularly noteworthy that there is a manpower crisis in several wards. For these areas, plans should be made to recruit workers on an urgent basis and increase their skills. Regular monitoring should be increased to ensure the attendance and quality of work of employees.

CCC Chief Executive Officer Sheikh Muhammad Touhidul Islam, Secretary Md Ashraful Amin, Chief Engineer Mohammad Abul Kashem, Zonal Executive Officers and officials of Engineering and Clean Department were present on the occasion.
